A Prayer for Humanity

The day

had quieted

I went

inside

shut

myself in

looking forward

to the silence

to being alone

with my thoughts

I searched

the memories

feeling

my heart swell

until it burst

again

other parts

crushed

by longing

nostalgia

I howled

my pain

into the night

my wails

reverberating

filling

emptiness

I do this

periodically

to feel deeply

reminds me

I am human

alive

It wasn’t

you chose

to move on

it was

with whom

why

In this

shallow world

driven

by forces

that colonize

silence

disenfranchise

you

chose status

membership

You

denied me

denied truth

beauty

love

Everyday

I sit

with myself

look

into the mirror

peer

into my soul

beseech

it not

lose hope

in humanity
