I want to talk today about the Element of Fire. It’s creative and destructive, transformational, helpful, passionate and life-giving. Without Fire, we wouldn’t have survived ancient times. And as candle and incense lovers know, it is incredibly beautiful. Fire separated humans from the Neanderthal. All Fire is sacred. When the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, tongues of Fire floated above their heads. Fire is sacred to St. Bridget (goddess Brigid), as well as to Zoroastrians.
I use Fire to light candles and incense, to diffuse essential oils, and to smoke-cleanse with sage. There’s nothing like gazing into a candle flame for a deep meditation. Fire heats our homes and makes cooking possible, vegetarian or omnivore. Fire can also be a symbol, such as the digestive fire, or sexual fire. Fire makes our vehicles run.
There are wildfires right now in Oregon and Canada. That’s the destructive aspect of Fire. Some wildfires are good for the forests, helping new growth burst forth, but in general, it’s not a good thing when it gets out of control. It’s like Mother Earth’s anger and bad temper. That’s how I see it.
Have you ever seen a Fire dancer? It’s incredible and beautiful what they can accomplish with Fire, not hurting themselves. Fire is the Sun and the stars. It is the core of Mother Earth. It is essential for life to exist at all.
Blessed Be, and Amen.
Have you ever seen Avatar: The Last Airbender? It maybe a kids show, but it has a lot of adult themes and very serious themes. There are four nations that are able to control different elements, fire is one of them. The villains of the show is the Firebenders and their King. Because they waged war with other nations, everyone has seen fire as power, destruction, hurtful, and deadly. Yet, fire is like a beating heart. It needs air. In small doses, it gives life. It gives heat. Fire helps thing grow, the same way the sun helps give off energy. Fire is beautiful, but without restraint, it can be a burden to everyone.
