I have flat out avoided this question in the past. On the one hand, I love that people even think to ask it. Or when they can’t figure out whether to call me sir or ma’am? The euphoria. But to come right out and say I’m genderqueer in public? One time someone asked it and I just flat out pretended not to hear. I zone out a lot, so it wasn’t a stretch.
But the other night I got asked this…. and I actually answered it…. and it wasn’t terrible. Had to explain how genderqueer was different than pansexual. (Sometimes I forget that most people don’t spend large amounts of their day contemplating gender and sexuality and how they are different and how they are connected to each other.) But they were chill with it. And it was just nice to feel seen without it being a big deal.
