About a year ago, I lost my job. It was a crappy waitress job and my boss was a total idiot on so many levels, but it was a job and it was paying bills and keeping me from loosing my marbles for 20 hours a week.

I remember that day vividly and I will never forget it. I walked into my workplace, my boss took me to his office and said he was letting me go and he was sorry. He told me that I didn't have to finish the shift and that he would write me a decent reference. I held it together right up until I got round the corner from the coffee shop at which point I collapsed into a heap on the nearest bench and I cried my eyes out. I didnt look up and I didnt really care who was seeing me this way, I just couldnt stop crying. I went into my own world and was wondering what the hell I was going to do when this tiny little female voice said "Do you want a tissue?" I looked up and it was a kind faced girl of about 20ish who had plonked herself on the bench next to me and she said " I'm sorry, it's just that you looked upset and I thought maybe you wanted to talk about it." I was gobsmacked that this total stranger was taking an interest in my wellbeing but I told her all about the morning's event's and we ended up still talking an hour later over costa coffee.

She had to go to work and so we bid our goodbyes and went our seperate ways but I felt so much better than I had before. She had told me to keep my chin up and that good things would come my way and I believed her.

I've never seen that girl since but whenever I feel low, I think of her and it puts a smile on my face and hope in my heart. Now, when I see someone upset, whether I know who they are or not, I will always offer up a tissue because you never know what a difference you will make to someone's life….

I'm sorry you lost your job like that. I've been laid off before so I know that hurt. It's so wonderful you had someone reach out to you like that. In my experience its rare.

Yeah, I guess you win some you loose some. Unfortunately the hospitality industry is like that though! no job is ever secure because the getting rid proccess is too easy for those kinds of employers…
