For a lot of you, this is no news. It gets cold every year. You understand snow. Being a native of Los Angeles, that is not my story.
So this morning I went over to my local AA clubhouse and there was a catastrophe. The pipes froze and ruptured last night. Water was shooting off of the roof. I suppose this would be a problem for any business, but that meant there was NO COFFEE for the alcoholics!
All the businesses to the left and the right had water running off of their respective roofs. It had to be at least six different businesses on that block. TRY getting a plumber on a Sunday!
When I got home, I realized that water was also running off of my roof. Later, there was a man up on the roof pushing giant sheets of ice onto the ground, so I suppose something happened to our solar water heater. This was a massive amount of ice and it was afternoon by this time, so I can only imagine how thick it must have been this morning. I had to drive over this now-crushed ice, so it was like driving through snow in my parking lot.
Apparently half the pipes in town burst last night. I guess in other parts of the country pipes wear little jackets. There is usually no reason to insulate pipes here.
I know it got down to under 28 degrees here for over 2 hours, so that's how this happened. I heard it was 11 degrees in Lancaster, which is just over the hill. We didn't have any precipitation, so no snow … but damn!
And it is supposed to do the same thing again tonight. I'm saying a little prayer for all the homeless folks out there. It wasn't that many years ago that it could have been me. There but for the grace of God go I…
I bet even hell froze over last night…
