Hello. Addictions are something most people deal with in their lives. Addictions can be negative and positive. For instance, most adults drink coffee every morning when waking. Many people might actually admit that they feel addicted to caffeine. If you are trying to stop using nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs, it is possible. There are many strategies. First, try to not be around peers that use these substances a lot. Peers influence us a lot. Minimize contact with peers that do these things. If they are supportive of you, telling them could help. However, if they are not supportive, this could cause them to pressure you even more. Using substances is Not cool. Using certain substances to the point where it’s harming your life is not cool. Drinking some as an adult or social smoking/ vaping is not terrible. However, if it causes problems with your personal life, it’s a problem. Next, change apart of your identity. For instance, when someone asks you to partake in smoking, vaping, drinking, etc. just say, no thanks, I’m not a smoker. I’m not a caper etc. In other words, you are saying, it’s not apart of who you are at your core. Also, think about when/ where you normally smoke/ Vape, drink. A lot of times, people use as a response to certain contexts or settings. For example, a lot of smokers do so when having coffee in the morning. Emotional responses is also common. Learn to respond to stress in healthy ways. Learn to practice mindfulness, meditation, exercise, eating healthy, and sleeping 7-9 hours every single night. These are lifestyle habits that can make you feel great most of the time. Life is about habits. The more we do something, the easier it becomes. Give yourself time to change any habits of addiction. You can do it :).
