That we got nothin to complain about!

"If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following. There would be:
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 would be Africans
52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be non-white
30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would
be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
ONE would be near death; ONE would be near birth
ONE would have a college education
ONE would own a computer.

 …

If you woke up this morning
with more health than illness,
you are more blessed than the
million who won't survive the week.

If you have never experienced
the danger of battle,
the loneliness of imprisonment,
the agony of torture or
the pangs of starvation,
you are ahead of 20 million people
around the world.

If you attend a church meeting
without fear of harassment,
arrest, torture, or death,
you are more blessed than almost
three billion people in the world.

If you have food in your refrigerator,
clothes on your back, a roof over
your head and a place to sleep,
you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank,
in your wallet, and spare change
in a dish someplace, you are among
the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still married and alive,
you are very rare,
especially in the United States.

If you can read this message,
you are more blessed than over
two billion people in the world
that cannot read anything at all."

I understand the sentiment but I have never, and will never, agree with the thought that because other people have it worse, we do not have anything to complain about. That'd be like saying, "You can't complain about losing your arm, that guy lost both arms."

"Well he can't complain either because that guy over there lost both arms and a leg."

Being depressed/anxious/obsessive compulsive/etc. isn't a choice, we don't choose to not enjoy life. While it's a nice message, it isn't one that's going to cure whatever is wrong with those who can't drag themselves out of bed in the morning or go an entire week without having an anxiety attack. I'd really like it if it could because frankly I'm kinda sick of this crap but unfortunately, it won't. =/

The title of my blog and the very first line of my post are lyrics to a song called Rainshine by Bran Van 3000.  I didn't write them, but I mostly agree with them.

I'm not trying to belittle anyone's problems and I won't stop someone from complaining if that's what they need to do.  But, I don't think we can complain forever.  Complaining is the opposite of solving.  And seeing as this is a self-help community, maybe we should be trying to do everything we're capable of doing to help ourselves and shut out the voice of negativity that pollutes our thoughts.  I would assume the best way to do that is by learning how to recognize it and finding our own ways to shut it out.  My way is by focusing on the positive, on the good stuff rather than the bad, on what I have rather than what I don't.

I didn't make this post for anyone but myself.  No one has to agree.
