One of the ways in which I can keep track of the progress I've made in my struggle with my form of mental illness is noticing the little things, those small moments that signal to me that a behavior or at least a response to something is changing.
I decided I needed a break from social media this week and have temporarily deactivated my Facebook account as a consequence. I realized at the time that I hadn't had the opportunity to let some of my freinds know I was doing this, but I figured that when they emailed me to ask what's going on, I could explain and that would be that.
Signing onto my gmail account today, I saw that there wasn't one email from any of my friends on Facebook. Nary a question nor query to be found. In the past, my mind would have almost immediately jumped to the conclusion that they didn't care, they never notice me and they're false friends, so to hell with them, right? Obviously this is not a healthy , rational response.
Today, i saw the lack of emails, shrugged and figured that either they weren't aware of my absence yet or just didn't feel like asking. Either way, I'm okay with it. I moved on with my evening and will return to Facebook further on up the road when and if I feel like it, not a moment before. Ahhhh..now THAT'S a healthy reaction!
Remember that your personal victories are your victories. It doesn't matter if anyone else thinks much of them. It only matters that they matter to you. I'd guess that pretty much anyone reading this blog entry can finds lots of little moments that serve as signposts that they're getting control over their situation one step at a time.
Giant strides forward are wonderful, but usually it's all the little things combined that add up to the most signifigant triumph.
you are a very helpful individual DS
Thank you for your entry, DS. It gave me hope. And you're right; the smallest changes in this fight can mean everything to us: and that's what matters. One step at a time. And when looking behind, you realize how much you grew!
Once again, thanks for the feedback , folks!. I'm glad you find it helpful. More to come . I plan to stay a while.
