Everyone has different tools in their toolbox to keep them sober and help them cope when that urge arises. Yesterday was a beautiful day where I live and I picked up my daughters from my ex after they got out of school. I live down the street from them so I can see them more often although people think it strange that I live so close to my ex. Upon picking up my daughters my 7 year old drew me a picture and on the picture she wrote, “ You’re the best Dad ever and I love you! “. A year ago I would have been anything but a good Dad because I was so into self-pity I couldn’t see the blessing I had right in front of my eyes. I now have added this picture to my toolbox. I carry a picture of my daughters with me everywhere I go. I remember one day not too long ago where nothing went right and I was ready to go back out. I pulled into the parking lot at the liquor store and the devil was on my shoulder. I knew I didn’t want to drink but the devil on my shoulder was rationalizing why it was ok until I pulled out the picture of my daughters. As soon as I did that it was like showing a cross to a vampire I instantly started my car a drove home. After that I actually was very proud of myself for not giving alcohol power over me. I just thought I’d share this because maybe this might work for someone else. It is always nice to hear how others cope and what others do to release that urge when it comes. Also sometimes something that my seem so simple may not cross your mind, but when another suggests it as a tool it comes in very handy. So let’s here from others out there on what tools help you because some of the newbies here can probably use them. Have a great day everyone!
