It's frustrating at my office. I spent many, many visits to our publisher wanting to report people for being on Facebook while at work, only to be told (before I'd even mention a name) that Facebook is allowed due to being able to find stories on Facebook (which, to be fair is a little iffy since FB can be full of a LOT of hearsay which is not permissible to print in the newspaper). So, after some time I gave up trying to report people since I wasn't getting anywhere (at the time, I did not have an account myself). Later, I'd joined the SCA and found most often that they would arrange events and meeting with Facebook. Most of the time I relied on my husband to post on Facebook for us, since almost every trip we took together. But once we started picking and choosing what ones we wanted to go to (and some of them were different), I ended up caving and getting an account. Now that I have one, I decided: I couldn't beat them, I might as well join them. So now, at work, I use Facebook just like the people I tried to report do/did. But there's now this problem: While the publisher still insists that Facebook is allowed, my manager continues to berate me about it. I don't think that's fair. It is allowed, and I am still getting my work done. In fact, being on Facebook is better than what some of the people next to me do (text on their phones, take repeated private phone calls all day, walk off to other departments to chit-chat, etc). I'm here, at my desk, available to answer the front counter and the phone at any given notice. I don't play Facebook games for this reason. I am available to do my job the entire time, it just fills up the time I have to sit and wait for something to happen. I am irritated that if this is something allowed, I shouldn't be berated about it. But I am unsure how to proceed about the situation. Firstly: My manager has constantly been a source of harassment, even before she was my manager (see previous posts about that mess). Secondly: My publisher is easily swayed by her. I'm not sure why, he just seems everything is hunky-dory no matter how pissed I am (she's actually LAUGHED at me in front of him and he didn't even defend me). Lastly: While I am known to go to corporate for issues that I find unresolved, I'm not so sure this one will pass muster with corporate. My reasoning is that I fear the “Facebook is allowed” rule my be office specific. I do know that I also use Facebook as a means of keeping myself calm in the office. I'm still trying to find a good happy-medium to handle my anxiety & depression, and this certainly works for keeping it at bay during work hours. Does anyone have an suggestions on how I should handle this?
