HOW CAN WE GET “RESTORED” TO SANITY?
THE “TRUTH” WILL SET US FREE – THE “TRUTH” ACCORDING TO BILL W. AND DR. BOB
1. When we were approached by those in whom the problem had been – solved, there was nothing left for us to do, but to “pick up” the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet. (A.A. Page 25)
2. Burn the idea into the consciousness of every newcomer, that – they can get well – regardless of anyone. The only “condition” is that they – trust in God and clean house. (A.A. Page 98)
3. Anyone who knows the addictive personality by firsthand contact – knows – that no true alcoholic or drug addict ever stops drinking “permanently” without undergoing a “profound” personality change. (As Bill Sees It – Page 1)
4. The great fact is this… We have had – deep and effective spiritual experiences – which have revolutionized our whole attitude toward life. The central fact of our lives today is the – absolute certainty – that our Creator has entered into our hearts and minds which is indeed – miraculous. He has commenced to accomplish those things in ourselves which we could – never – do by ourselves. (A.A. Page 25)
5. You may be suffering from a disease which – only a spiritual experience will conquer. To be doomed to an alcoholic death or to live on a spiritual basis – are not always easy alternatives to face. (A.A. Page 44)
6. The point is – we are willing grow – along spiritual lines. (A.A. Page 60)
7. Remind the “potential” newcomer that their recovery is NOT dependent upon people. It IS dependent upon their “relationship” with God.” (A.A. Page 99)
8. Though not a religious person, I have profound respect for the spiritual approach in cases such as yours. For most cases – there is virtually no other solution… because at certain times, the alcoholic (or the drug addict) has – no effective mental defense – against the first drink (or drug.) Except in a few RARE cases, neither they nor any other human being can provide such a defense. Their defense – must come from – a Higher Power.” (A.A. Page 43)
9. THERE IS A SOLUTION. Almost none of us liked:
• The self-searching. (Steps 1, 2, and 3.)
• The leveling of our pride. (Step 4)
• The confession our shortcomings (Step 5) which the process – requires¬¬- for its “successful” consummation. (A.A. Page 25)
10. The “problem” has been – removed. IT DOES NOT EXIST FOR US. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. This is our experience. This is how we react so long as – we stay in fit “spiritual” condition. (A.A. Page 85)
11. Our “real” purpose is to become – spiritually fit – so we can be of “maximum” service to God, and the people God puts in our lives. (A.A. Page 77)
12. Unless each member follows, to the best of their ability our ‘suggested’ Twelve Steps to recovery, they almost certainly sign their own – death warrant.” (Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions – Page 174)
Last year, I went sky diving for the first time. It was “suggested” that I put on parachute before I jumped out of the plane. Perhaps this is the context in which the word “suggested” is used regarding the Twelve Steps.
