Talking about my mental state has always been awkward for me, I guess I got an early start since I have always felt “a little bit out of place”. My name is Iris and my pronouns are one, she & her in order of preference, I learned how to talk about myself from my therapist, who I started seeing when i was twelve, about ten years ago.

Give your parents time to think about ( why ) you are are depressed. For you, feeling depressed is not a new thing. For your parents however, this is a surprise, and is likely to make them feel uneasy.

I know it is hard… but try to be patient with them.

Q – Have you tried to write down your feelings? And then let them read it… For me, writing (by hand) is a calm way for me to get ideas out of my head. Many times words get jumbled up when I am trying to think about what words to say. Writing slows my thoughts down so I have a better chance of explaining them.

They might be worried that you are feeling this way because of them? Their response might be coming from a state of fear or confusion… Let them know ( why ) you are telling them this. Ask them for some help.
