ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response which is a long strand of words for a shorter purpose that most describe as relaxation. ASMR videos are most commonly found on Youtube, where the community has grown to be quite large over the span of the last 10 years. The sole purpose of these videos is to make you feel calm, relaxed and sleepy.
“What do these videos consist of?”, you might add. Well ASMR videos are so wide in variation that I couldn’t give you a straight answer. There are roleplays like crystal shop roleplays or more commonly, haircuts and makeup roleplays. There are so many diverse roleplays out there for anyone who might be a little more odd in their picks (not to say that that is by any means, wrong or bad!) For example, there quite a few more wild ones like erotic or relationship roleplays along with alien abductions or bitchy librarians. Whatever twist’s you may be interested in, there are many for you!
“What if I don’t want to hear them talking? It creeps me out!” Well, my young grasshopper, I had the same issue as you at the start. I hated hearing them talk and I absolutely could not stand it. I thought it was creepy and way too personal to be soothing. But don’t fret! There is a whole sub community for people like you (and once me)! There are many ASMR videos completely dedicated to tapping on objects (like soap, plastic objects, wood or glass, just to name the basics.) More silent ASMR videos are usually “unboxing videos” where an ASMRtist (the title given to an ASMR youtuber) unboxes a particular subscription to maybe an online video game subscription box or a makeup subscription box. Lastly, animals are very popular in the ASMR community. You will find endless cat or kitten purring videos under the ASMR title. Whatever you wish to find, I can almost guarantee you will find it!
“Is there anything for us women on our cycles?” A very uncommon question that I still feel obligated to answer. Here comes the peace for all you women who have to deal with a monthly subscription to mother nature and her ways with the human body (more commonly known as, a period.) I get severe cramps while on my cycle and most of the women I know have the same issue. There is another sub category of ASMR that caters not just to us but greatly to us. It’s well known as “Isochronic tones” which has been well known across the female world to put to sleep us suffering victims of cramps as well as soothe the cramps away (or diminish them to a very small pain instead of an escalated one.) Isochronic tones work for me every time as well as many or all times for other women I have come into contact with. Some ASMRtists or beat makers make specific videos for menstrual cramps. Sit back and relax, my fellow ladies.
“What does the title mean? You haven’t addressed anxiety or insomnia at all!” Here is your soothing agent, my friend! ASMR has been well known amongst the community to cure or at least help many people’s insomnia as well as calm anxiety. The science to that, I have no idea. But seeing the testimonies of myself and others about how ASMR has conquered their life in an amazing way, is science enough for me. See the soothing sounds and speak of ASMR calm many and put them to sleep. Those who might have anxiety or insomnia, I highly suggest you make your way over to ASMR and explore for yourself, as my journey with anxiety has been helped so greatly by ASMR. For example, I am still in school so when I get anxious over my work, I put on an ASMR video. For almost a year, this has worked for me and I have not had an issue since. I am sure this last paragraph isn’t all too convincing but if you don’t believe me, feel free to look for yourself

Much love from The Journal,
